Short answer: to start playing cricket in Dubai, begin in the nets (with a coach or on your own), then join a club, an academy team or a weekend league so you play real matches. Children usually start at an academy, which also enters them in junior leagues. Adults usually join a club or a corporate or community league, often after a few coaching sessions. Book indoor, air-conditioned nets for the summer months, and buy kit once you know which format you’ll play: hard ball, tape ball or soft ball.
Step 1: Decide how you want to play
Cricket in Dubai comes in a few forms, and the right first step depends on which one you want:
| Format | Who plays it | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-ball (leather ball) cricket | Academy squads, clubs, ECB leagues | Full protective kit, coaching recommended |
| Tape-ball cricket | Weekend and community games, mostly adults | A bat and trainers; little protection needed |
| Soft-ball / indoor cricket | Beginners, families, corporate games | Very little kit |
If you want to play competitive matches or move towards UAE pathways, it’s hard-ball cricket.
Step 2: Get some coaching and net practice
Even a few sessions with a coach will set your grip, stance and bowling action up properly before bad habits form. You have three options:
- Group coaching at an academy: regular sessions with players at your level.
- Personal coaching: one-to-one or small-group sessions focused on your batting or bowling.
- Net rental: practise on your own or with friends once you know the basics. A bowling machine lets you face consistent deliveries at a pace you choose.
Dubai’s heat matters here. From May to September, outdoor practice is limited to early mornings and evenings, so an indoor, air-conditioned net is what keeps most players training year-round.
Step 3: Join a club, team or league
This is where most beginners get stuck, so here’s how it usually works:
- Children and teenagers usually play through their academy. Academies enter teams in junior leagues, including the Emirates Cricket Board’s (ECB) Academy League, and in inter-academy tournaments. Many schools also have teams.
- Adults join a cricket club or a team in a weekend, corporate or community league. Ask at your workplace first: many companies in Dubai have a team or know one. Community groups, social media groups and your local nets are the other common ways in.
- Ask about costs before you sign up. Clubs typically charge a season or membership fee, and many leagues add a match fee to cover ground hire and umpires.
- Bring your ID. Many leagues ask players to register with an Emirates ID or residence visa. Check with the organiser.
When you approach a club, tell them honestly how much you’ve played. Most clubs have a lower team or a development side where newer players get games.
How to join the UAE cricket team
There’s no application form for the national team. Players are selected by the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) from the domestic game, so the route is:
- Play hard-ball cricket regularly with an academy or club.
- Perform in recognised competitions: for juniors, the ECB’s age-group leagues and tournaments; for adults, ECB-recognised domestic leagues.
- Get noticed by selectors through those competitions and any ECB trials or development squads. Your coach or club will usually know when trials are announced.
- Meet the eligibility rules. To represent the UAE, you must meet the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) eligibility criteria, which are based on nationality, birth or a qualifying period of residence in the UAE. The ECB can confirm the current rules.
For young players, the best start is an academy whose teams play in ECB competitions, so performances are seen by the right people.
Step 4: Get the right kit (in the right order)
You don’t need everything on day one. Most academies lend equipment for the first few sessions.
- Shoes with good grip, plus comfortable sportswear.
- A bat of the right size and weight. Too heavy is the most common beginner mistake. Ask your coach before you buy.
- Protection for hard-ball cricket: helmet, batting gloves, pads, thigh guard and box (abdominal guard).
- A kit bag once you’ve built up your gear.
Wicketkeepers need keeping gloves and inner gloves; bowlers mainly need good shoes.
Step 5: Learn the basics of the game
You’ll pick up the rules quickly by playing, but these are the essentials:
- Two teams take turns to bat and bowl/field. Each team’s turn is an innings.
- Batters score runs by running between the wickets, or with boundaries: 4 if the ball reaches the rope after bouncing, 6 if it clears it without bouncing.
- The main ways to be out are bowled, caught, run out, stumped and LBW (leg before wicket).
- Limited-overs matches are commonly T20 (20 overs a side) or longer one-day formats. Junior academy league matches are often shorter.
- Extras (wides, no-balls, byes and leg-byes) add runs to the batting side.
